Subject Description

Mathematical reasoning is built on the principles of abstraction and generalisation, and the fundamental concept of logical proof. You will explore theories of logic and proof, the abstract concepts of relations, functions, recursion and induction, and graph structures and counting principles. These are central themes throughout mathematics, computer science and beyond. Through active practice and independent research, you will develop skills in rigorous and creative thinking and precise writing and thereby build strong foundations for analysing, solving and communicating complex problems.

Learning Outcomes

  • analyse the logical structure of arguments and assess their validity
  • apply appropriate techniques to solve problems and formulate and prove simple theorems
  • explore patterns and apply abstract concepts in familiar and unfamiliar contexts
  • communicate mathematical theorems and their proofs with clarity and precision

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (10%) - Individual
  • Written > Problem task - (30%) - Individual
  • Written > Workbook - (60%) - Individual
