Subject Description

    This subject focuses on the different processes that are available for resolving conflict including negotiation, mediation, conciliation, arbitration, facilitation, conferencing, conflict coaching, family dispute resolution and collaborative law. It is an introductory subject to a range of conflict resolution processes. Students will consider the differences between the various processes and develop the capacity to evaluate which process is most suitable for a particular conflict situation.

Learning Outcomes

  • critically analyse a range of complex conflicts and conflict management systems
  • provide general advice to assist individuals, groups and organisations to constructively manage conflict
  • effectively communicate with people in conflict (such as personal, group, organisational or cross-cultural conflict)
  • autonomously reflect on and assess their own capabilities and performance and make use of feedback as appropriate, to support personal and professional development

  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (40%) - Individual
  • Written > Case study analysis - (50%) - Individual
  • Written > Problem task - (10%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

This subject will be taught online through LearnJCU. Students must engage in online learning from the first week of the study period and throughout the entire study period. There will be online collaborate sessions scheduled throughout the semester.
