Subject Description

    The subject aims to provide an academic award in infection prevention and control that is responsive to learning needs, national accreditation requirements and requirements of employers; to educate health professionals about infection prevention and control in a range of health care settings in Australia and in resource limited countries.

Learning Outcomes

  • Outline the principles of the chain of infection in the context of different pathogenic microorganisms and compare and contrast non-specific and specific host immune responses
  • Appraise the significance of healthcare-associated infections and their causative pathogens, and plan and implement strategies for their management
  • Apply infection prevention and control principles, strategies and policies in high and resource limited countries
  • Design strategies for the education of health personnel in infection prevention and control, and implement continuing professional development plans for infection prevention and control personnel
  • Initiate and maintain a successful team approach to infection prevention and control and evaluate the team's performance
  • Analyse building design and infrastructure and evaluate its impact on infection prevention and control

  • Written > Critical appraisal/review - (20%) - Individual
