Subject Description

    This subject will deepen the theoretical knowledge regarding health professional research design, use and application. Students will obtain practical experience applying their knowledge to develop a research question relevant for their discipline practice. As part of this, students will determine the research methods appropriate to answer the research question these will be practical and align with a research gap that advances existing research knowledge. This subject builds on the knowledge learnt in HS2402: Health Professional Research 1. Students will design a research project using either a qualitative or quantitative methodology. Introduction to evidence-based practice and structured critical appraisal will be a central component of this subject. Within this it encompasses the importance of integrating ethical research practice, interpreting research findings and discerning research quality and rigour. Students will utilise this learning in developing a research proposal and strengthen their research skills. All of these activities will contribute to student development as a research literate health care professional.

Learning Outcomes

  • Recognise and discuss the theoretical and applied dimensions of ethics as relevant to research in allied health sciences
  • Describe the theoretical concepts of qualitative and quantitative research conduct for health professional research
  • Apply these theoretical concepts to develop a written research proposal that requires employing a qualitative or quantitative approach
  • Assess the qualitative and quantitative literature using critical appraisal approaches as part of the evidence-based practice cycle
  • Recognise the processes that constitute quality research practice which encompass reliability, validity and trustworthiness

Special Assessment Requirements
