HI2010 - History of Science, Technology, and Medicine in the Torrid Zone

Credit points:03
Year:2024
Student Contribution Band:Band 4
Administered by:College of Arts, Society & Education

Subject Description

The histories of science, technology, and medicine are usually narrated as stories that belong primarily to the global north. This subject reorients and displaces these narratives, exploring the development of modern science, technology, and medicine from the perspectives of the tropics. Following colonial stereotypes, the tropics have long been perceived by the global north as unproductive zones, rife with deadly disease, and unsuitable for innovative work. On the other hand, modern science, technology, and medicine have been driven by labour, exploration, and "discovery" in the global south, particularly the tropics. This subject will explore the consequences of the exploitation of the tropics and its peoples as resources for the development of modern science, technology, and medicine.
