Subject Description

    This subject prepares students for academic performance in disciplined, self-directed thinking through training in the use of strategies, skills, and conventions expected of suitably proficient readers and writers. Students will acquire skills to equip them in the recognition and avoidance of common errors in reasoning and to state, explain and apply criteria for writing analytical and persuasive writing. In addition, students will also be developing and evaluating arguments and should also be able to explain plus apply basic concepts / principles of inductive and deductive reasoning. A fundamental skills base that is applicable across disciplines, this subject will enable students to develop and expand their writing skills and to draw reasonable conclusions. With critical thinking and writing abilities, students can progress into their fields of study.

Learning Outcomes

  • demonstrate the ability to identify and avoid plagiarism, and use appropriate in-text citation and referencing techniques
  • apply critical thinking skills to analyze and evaluate information, arguments, and ideas from a range of sources
  • identify, evaluate, integrate, and apply different types of information to form independent and informed judgments in written and oral communication
  • produce ideas in a systematic and organized manner, using appropriate planning and drafting techniques
  • demonstrate an understanding of the appropriate register and writing conventions for academic essays, including structure, style, and tone
  • demonstrate an understanding of logical fallacies, identify slanted arguments, and appreciate ambiguity in written and spoken communication
  • revise and edit written work for accuracy, clarity, and coherence
