Subject Description

    This subject promotes students' awareness of the importance of statistics in everyday life and to build up confidence in making effective use of introductory-level research, data analysis, and presentation skills. The aim is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to make effective use of methods of describing quantitative data through the use of graphical and numerical methods, interpretation of results and making decisions in both business and everyday life.

Learning Outcomes

  • display and explore data
  • describe data using frequency tables, frequency distributions and graphical presentations
  • describe data using numerical measures
  • compute probabilities
  • compute the mean and variance of the binomial probability distribution
  • demonstrate a basic understanding of the concept of central limit theorem and its application
  • compute the mean and variance of the continuous probability distribution
  • use and apply the appropriate sampling method
  • use and apply correlation and simple linear regression analysis
