Subject Description

    This subject provides a basic knowledge of the cultural and organisational frameworks within which international business is conducted. It adopts a multi-disciplinary approach to introduce students to important issues and challenges in managing cultural diversity in the workplace. Conceptual and theoretical frameworks are used to develop an understanding of the ways in which cultures differ and how such differences impact on organizations.

Learning Outcomes

  • demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical frameworks and conceptual tools that describe the development of communication systems
  • acquire and analyze knowledge and skills to increase intercultural competence, including an understanding of how communication processes differ among cultures
  • recognize the active production and negotiation of meanings in communication, and examine the unique relationship between history, culture, and identity as it functions for diverse groups of people
  • develop a critical perspective on local/global issues by examining the meaning, importance, and tensions of international communication and the historical and political dimensions of intercultural relations
  • exhibit self-reflection, flexibility, and openness in intercultural communication interactions
  • identify and creatively address barriers to effective intercultural communication, such as racism, sexism, and systems of privilege that arise from histories of colonization, exploitation, and discrimination
