EG5311 - Research Project 1

Credit points:03
Year:2024
Student Contribution Band:Band 2
Prerequisites:Must have completed 18 credit points within the MEng (Prof) program
Administered by:College of Science and Engineering

Subject Description

In the Research Project, students undertake a substantial piece of independent research under supervision of appointed supervisor/s. Research projects may consist of application of advanced laboratory, field or computer techniques to analyse and design solutions for an engineering problem. Research topics are often based on real world problems in cooperation with local and regional industries. Research Project 1 (EG5311) is a 3 credit point subject. This is the first part of the Research Project where students are required to choose a research topic, conduct a comprehensive literature review, define scope and objectives of the research, define methodologies to achieve the objectives, prepare detailed project planning and conduct preliminary study. Students are required to submit a research proposal and give a research proposal seminar

Learning Outcomes

  • locate, interpret, and critically appraise available literatures and resources to justify research gaps, formulate research problems, objectives and methodologies
  • identify and critically appraise current developments, advanced technologies and emerging issues
  • design experiments/simulation and fluently apply advanced engineering techniques and systems approach to develop engineering solutions to complex problems
  • communicate project objectives and outcomes with scientists, engineers and the community at large in written and oral forms
  • plan engineering and research projects of significant size and scope

Subject Assessment

  • Oral > Presentation 1 - (20%) - Individual
  • Written > Research report - (80%) - Individual
