EE4600 - Automatic Control 2

Credit points:03
Year:2024
Student Contribution Band:Band 2
Prerequisites:EE3600 OR ADMITTANCE INTO MASTER OF ENGINEERING (PROF)
Administered by:College of Science and Engineering

Subject Description

<b>Section A</b> - Sampled-Data Systems: Uses classical (frequency-domain transfer function) techniques in the analysis and design of digital controllers for the control of analogue plants, termed sample data systems. Plants and controllers are modelled using the z-transform which leads to rational transfer functions allowing for the usual pole/zero terminology and system performance specification and analysis. <b>Section B</b> - Modern Controller Design: Uses modern (time-domain state space) techniques in the analysis and design of controllers for continuous time plants. This section starts with developing state models of systems from both physical properties and transfer functions. It then investigates techniques for the design of controllers for systems that are modelled in state-space form such as the pole-placement technique. Associated with this are the concepts of controllability, observability and state feedback controller design

Learning Outcomes

  • develop models of plants and controllers using the z-transform, leading to rational transfer functions and allowing for pole/zero terminology in sampled- data systems
  • analyse and design digital controllers for analogue plants using classical frequency-domain transfer function techniques, specifying and assessing system performance
  • develop state models of continuous-time systems from physical properties and transfer functions
  • design controllers for state-space modeled systems using techniques such as pole-placement, applying concepts of controllability, observability, and state feedback controller design
