Subject Description

    In order to be effective in career development service provision, practitioners need counselling skills to facilitate client change. This subject introduces students to counselling theories, microskills, and techniques, linked to contemporary career development theory and practice. Students will develop comprehensive knowledge and proficiencies applying these theories, microskills, and techniques across the career development lifecycle. In particular, they will be able to apply these skills and techniques effectively across education, employment and community contexts, for a range of client concerns. The Career Counselling workshop provides students with extensive opportunities to apply career counselling techniques and theories to a range of client contexts. During this highly immersive workshop, over two consecutive days, students undertake role plays, real plays and observational exercises to develop skills and apply these skills to career counselling and to diverse and complex scenarios. Working with experienced practitioners, participants receive personalised and immediate feedback on their counselling skills, to increase competence and effectiveness.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply advanced communication and advocacy skills to interpret, evaluate and justify complex ideas and professional judgements to a broad range of stakeholders
  • Formulate an integrated personal approach of counselling, incorporating career development theories for use in practice
  • Identify and evaluate major theories and models of counselling such as Narrative, Cognitive Behavioural, Person-Centred, and Motivational Interviewing
  • Apply a range of contextually-appropriate microskills and integrate effective counselling techniques to a range of career development contexts and concerns

  • Written > Reflection/reflective task 1 - (50%) - Individual

Assumed Knowledge:  Ability to produce both written and verbal work at a graduate level. Possession of strong academic literacies as required for the successful completion of the assessment tasks in this subject. Appropriate and adequate knowledge and skills to engage critically with assigned readings and activities. Possession of general digital skills to undertake studies in an online learning environment.
