ED5581 - Theories and Assessment in Career Development

Subject Description

A comprehensive understanding of career development theory forms the basis of quality career development practice. In this subject, students will be introduced to foundational theoretical perspectives which underpin contemporary career development theories to be able to master career counselling techniques and anchor their professional practice in a theoretical orientation. Students will also become familiarised with a range of career assessment tools and their application in career development. In developing a comprehensive understanding of career development theories and assessment tools, students will critically reflect on application of those theories and tools in a range of contexts across educational, community and employment settings. As part of this subject, students will also begin integrating these theories into their own personal theory of career development and practice.

Learning Outcomes

• critically analyse the theoretical origins and relevant concepts underpinning contemporary career development theories and distinguish between career development, counselling and career counselling theories
• examine various types of career assessment tools, critically analyse and conceptualise their role in career development practice
• apply career development theories to a range of career development guidance and counselling contexts and diverse client concerns
• apply advanced communication and advocacy skills to interpret, evaluate and justify complex ideas and professional judgements to a broad range of stakeholders

• Written > Critical appraisal/review - (40%) - Individual

Assumed Knowledge:  Ability to produce both written and verbal work at a graduate level. Possession of strong academic literacies as required for the successful completion of the assessment tasks in this subject.
