Subject Description

Pre-service teachers will engage with culturally-diverse schools and classrooms, with consideration of broader regional, national and international contexts. The subject attends to the development of intercultural understandings for culturally-inclusive teaching and learning practice. The subject also consolidates learnings from across the degree and requires pre-service teachers to critically reflect on pre-conceptions, pedagogical and ethical practice, professional experience, research and policy related to cultural diversity. Pre-service teachers will engage with historical and contemporary issues related to cultural diversity including nationalism, multiculturalism, and ethnic, racial, gender and religious diversity. Pre-service teachers will critique and challenge social constructions and normative assumptions of cultural diversity, and take a reflexive stance on their own identity and agency as a graduate teacher to effect change for cultural inclusion.
