Subject Description

    In this subject, pre-service teachers will integrate meaningful community-based service learning (minimum 50 hours) and reflection to enrich their understanding of their professional identity as Health and Physical Education (HPE) specialists. Pre-service teachers will extend their disciplinary knowledge and pedagogical skills to design, deliver and assess innovative learning experiences for diverse children/adolescents. They will integrate technology to assist with making judgements about outcome attainment. The underlying aim of engagement in service learning is to strengthen communities through provision of HPE-related programs which advance children/adolescents' movement proficiencies, as well as Australian Curriculum General Capabilities and Cross Curriculum Priorities. Learning experiences are designed to support pre-service teachers' commitment to active citizenship in the communities in which they will work.

Learning Outcomes

  • 1. apply the key principles described in codes of ethics and conduct for the teaching profession
  • 2. demonstrate professional engagement with colleagues and the community through provision of a service learning project that utilises responsive and differentiated pedagogies that cater for diverse learners in Health and Physical Education
  • 3. evaluate and justify assessment moderation practices in Health and Physical Education, including how technology can be used to support making judgements about student learning
  • 4. critically reflect on service learning and active citizenship, as a Health and Physical Education specialist teacher, to understand how community engagement promotes educational futures
