Subject Description

    Building on pre-service teachers' growing understandings of how children from diverse backgrounds learn mathematics, this subject explores mathematical and pedagogical issues at an advanced level, with a particular focus on children's concept development and identifying misconceptions. In this subject, pre-service teachers engage with the P-6 Australian Curriculum: Mathematics, and examine contemporary national and state policies concerning mathematics education. The subject considers assessment, literacy and numeracy in primary school settings, and support pre-service teachers to become reflective practitioners who can interpret, plan and evaluate effective mathematics sequences grounded on the systematic interpretation of student data.

Learning Outcomes

  • 1 apply an advanced and integrated understanding of the concepts, content and teaching strategies of numeracy and mathematics in primary school classrooms
  • 2. identify a range of engaging teaching and learning resources, including ICT, that support differentiated learning of numeracy and mathematics
  • 3. organise classroom activities, provide clear directions and demonstrate a range of verbal and non-verbal communication strategies to support student engagement in numeracy and mathematics education
  • 4. apply an advanced and integrated understanding of assessment strategies (diagnostic, formative and summative), the interpretation of student assessment data to evaluate learning, and the provision of timely and appropriate feedback to students in primary school mathematics
