Credit points:03
Year:2024
Student Contribution Band:Band 1
Prerequisites:ED2093
Administered by:College of Arts, Society & Education

Subject Description

Building on pre-service teachers' growing understandings of how children from diverse backgrounds learn mathematics, this subject explores mathematical and pedagogical issues at an advanced level, with a particular focus on children's concept development and identifying misconceptions across the early years (birth to 8 years). In this subject, pre-service teachers engage with the Early Years Learning Framework, the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline and the P-3 Australian Curriculum: Mathematics. They also examine contemporary national and state policies concerning mathematics education. The subject will consider assessment, literacy and numeracy in early learning and school settings, and support pre-service teachers to become reflective practitioners who can interpret, plan and evaluate effective mathematics sequences grounded on the systematic interpretation of student data in the early years.

Learning Outcomes

  • 2. identify a range of engaging teaching and learning resources, including ICT, that support differentiated learning of numeracy and mathematics in the early years
  • 4. apply an advanced and integrated understanding of assessment strategies (diagnostic, formative and summative), the interpretation of student assessment data to evaluate learning, and the provision of timely and appropriate feedback to children in the early years
  • 1. apply an advanced and integrated understanding of the concepts, content and teaching strategies of numeracy and mathematics, and their application, as stipulated in early years' curriculum frameworks (birth to 8 years)
  • 3. organise classroom activities, provide clear directions and demonstrate a range of verbal and non- verbal communication strategies to support children's engagement in numeracy and mathematics education

Subject Assessment
