Subject Description

    The subject examines current national and state curriculum frameworks and policies in mathematics education, and contemporary approaches to teaching primary-aged children in 21st-century classrooms. The subject develops pre-service teachers' professional knowledge and competencies to effectively and equitably teach mathematics, and develop diverse students' positive dispositions towards numeracy. Upon completion of this subject, pre-service teachers will develop mathematical and pedagogical content knowledge, and an appreciation of ICT tools to facilitate and showcase learning. Pre-service teachers will demonstrate an understanding of a range of contemporary and research-informed pedagogies and assessment practices for teaching mathematics and numeracy, and the use of evidence to inform pedagogical decision-making through differentiated instruction.

Learning Outcomes

  • 3. create positive learning environments for effective learning and teaching of mathematics and numeracy for primary-aged children
  • 4. apply mathematics curriculum and assessment knowledge to design learning sequences and lesson plans for primary-aged children that integrate a range of teaching strategies, resources and ICTs
  • 1. apply the content and characteristics of developmentally-appropriate and socially-just mathematics curricula for primary children using the F- 6 Australian Curriculum: Mathematics
  • 2. apply knowledge of the learning processes used by primary-aged children of different socio-cultural backgrounds in learning mathematics
