Subject Description

    The subject examines current national and state curriculum frameworks and policies to develop pre-service teachers' professional knowledge and competencies to effectively and equitably teach mathematics and numeracy to diverse young children (from birth to 8 years). Upon completion of this subject, pre-service teachers will develop mathematical and pedagogical content knowledge; an appreciation of ICT tools to facilitate and showcase learning; and competencies to effectively develop positive dispositions towards numeracy to young children in 21st-century classrooms. Pre-service teachers will demonstrate an understanding of a range of contemporary and research-informed pedagogies and assessment practices for teaching mathematics and numeracy, and the use of evidence to inform pedagogical decision-making through differentiated instruction.

Learning Outcomes

  • 3. create positive learning environment for effective learning and teaching of mathematics and numeracy for young children
  • 4. apply mathematics curriculum, assessment and reporting knowledge to design learning sequences and lesson plans for young children that integrate a range of teaching strategies, resources and ICTs
  • 1. apply the content and characteristics of developmentally-appropriate and socially-just mathematics and numeracy curricula for young children using the Early Years Learning Framework, the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline and the F- 3 Australian Curriculum: Mathematics
  • 2. apply knowledge of the learning processes used by young children of different socio- cultural backgrounds in learning mathematics and numeracy
