ED1492 - Teaching Mathematics and Numeracy in Primary and Early Childhood Settings

Subject Description

    This subject engages Early Childhood and Primary pre-service teachers in exploring the mathematics and numeracy demands of the teaching profession, as they pertain to the Early Years Learning Framework, the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline and/or the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics (up to Year 9). Pre-service teachers examine mathematical content from a teacher's perspective with a focus on Number, Algebra and Statistics. This appraisal includes recognising and responding to students' alternative conceptions of mathematics. This subject includes an embedded 5-day Professional Experience placement to enable observation, reflection and practical implementation of the learning(s) in this subject.

Learning Outcomes

  • 2. plan, enact and evaluate effective strategies and resources, including Information Communication Technologies, for teaching numeracy and mathematics to diverse learners
  • 3. interpret, evaluate and report student assessment data to parents/carers
  • 1. apply knowledge of the concepts, substance and structure of the content of the Early Years Learning Framework, the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline and/or the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics
  • 4. describe a broad range of strategies for involving parents/carers in children's numeracy development

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Examination - In class - (20%) - Individual

  • Written > Lesson plan 1 - (45%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Achieve 50% or more on the final examination and 50% overall. Complete consecutive 5 day Placement, submit Satisfactory grading - Minimum Developing Adequately in all descriptors on the Prof Ex Report is required to pass the subject. Attendance at Prof Ex Workshops meets placement requirement procedures of the WIL Program. If repeating the subject, the reattempt at all subject assessments including the Placement is a requirement.
