Subject Description

    This subject is an introduction to The Arts in primary school, which is comprised of five (5) subjects: Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music and Visual Arts. It aims to facilitate the emergence of the artist within pre-service teachers, and nurture self-confidence and positive identity as an expressive artist and teacher. Pre-service teachers develop Arts knowledge, practices and skills, through 'Exploring', 'Creating' and 'Presenting' in the Primary years. Pre-service teachers implement techniques, skills and processes to explore creative practice and to make artworks. They will develop confidence and competence in enacting authentic Arts education in schools. Pre-service teachers will engage with the Australian Curriculum: The Arts (Prep-Year 6).

Learning Outcomes

  • 4. apply design principles and elements to critique, analyse, create and perform artworks
  • 2. employ a range of verbal and non-verbal communication strategies to support children's inclusive participation, engagement and learning in The Arts
  • 3. design and employ engaging learning activities that engage children in authentic art experiences
  • 1. apply knowledge of the concepts, substance and structure of the content and teaching strategies for The Arts in the primary years

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Examination - In class - (40%) - Individual
  • Performance/Practice/Product > Creative performance - (30%) - Group
  • Visual Arts and Media Folio - (30%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

As the learning tasks for this subject are practical, collaborative and proactive, either attendance at online tutorials, or regular, active and independent creative work is compulsory.
