Subject Description

    This subject is designed to meet the needs of students who want to master basic information security. It introduces the network security fundamentals by examining the current challenges in computer security and why security is difficult to achieve. It explores the importance of information security, and looks at the fundamental attacks (i.e. malware and social engineering attacks, application and networking-based attacks) including how to defend against them. That is, study of application and data security, basic and advance cryptography, administrating a secure network, wireless network security, mobile devices security, access control fundamentals, authentication and account management, vulnerability assessment, and risk mitigation.

Learning Outcomes

  • analyse and evaluate strengths of secure protocols
  • evaluate networking threats at both LAN and internet levels
  • analyse and explain defensive methods in e-security
  • analyse and explain the legal and ethical issues involved in E-Security including scope of liability and digital rights management
  • apply advanced research skills to develop a research study
