CC3003 - Internet of Things Systems and Security

Credit points:03
Year:2024
Student Contribution Band:Band 2
Prerequisites:CC2003
Administered by:College of Science and Engineering

Subject Description

This subject provides a whole-of-system perspective on the Internet of Things (IoT) with a focus on cloud infrastructure and security. Students learn how to design and implement cloud-based dashboards to act as management and analytics layers in IoT systems. This knowledge is applied as part of a design project to develop a complete end-to-end IoT system. Students also learn about security issues such as software vulnerabilities, authentication, and encryption, in order to be able to design and implement more secure IoT systems and analyse the security of existing systems. Furthermore, students critically analyse the privacy implications and ethical issues regarding pervasive technology in society.

Learning Outcomes

  • design and critically analyse an end-to-end IoT system for a chosen application domain
  • design and implement cloud-based dashboard software for an IoT application
  • assess the likely security of an IoT system design and make justified recommendations to improve security and reduce risk
  • explain common types of security issues and how these can be managed
  • critically analyse the benefits, risks, and ethical issues related to technology and the resulting implications for professional practice in the field

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (50%) - Individual
  • Written > Project report - (40%) - Group
  • Performance/Practice/Product > Practical assessment/practical skills demonstration - (10%) - Individual
