Subject Description

    Sound human resource decision making is pivotal to organisational success. Key decisions include: hiring the right types of workers; motivating staff through payment systems and benefits; evaluating and monitoring staff, and staff retrenchment when downsizing. This subject uses economics concepts to answer these and more questions re decision making in the workplace. This subject provides complementary skills to students interested in human resources, economics and those who are more generally interested in employee - employer relationships (for example students interested in organisational behaviour or psychology).

Learning Outcomes

  • describe a range of different economics concepts that explain employee and employer behaviour in the workplace
  • discuss and apply economics concepts to validate human resource decision making
  • design a human resources policy using economics concepts to address a human resources problem in a chosen business context

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (20%) - Individual
  • Oral > Presentation 1 - (20%) - Group
  • Written > Essay (including multi-draft) 1 - (30%) - Group
  • Participation > Online participation - (30%) - Individual
