Subject Description

People are the major asset of any organisation. This subject - Managing People - provides students with a solid foundation for understanding and addressing core issues, perspectives and decision-making procedures relating to the management of people at work (Human Resources). A central aim is to provide a framework for designing work and implementing workforce strategies using Human Resource Management (HRM) practices which are contemporary, relevant and equip organisations to achieve sustainable strategic and operational requirements in competitive and challenging environments and times, including those in tropical and regional areas. This is achieved by discussion and analysis of theoretical and practical examples from Australia and the international business environment. Topics include strategic HRM and workforce planning, talent attraction, recruitment, selection and retention, performance management, workplace health and safety, accountability, and workplace diversity. Emerging challenges relating to managing people in unique environments (such as the tropics, and remote and regional areas) will be woven through the subject. This subject is a core requirement for the Management and Human Resource Management Majors.
