Subject Description

    This subject provides students with a broad understanding of the operations of financial institutions, both locally and globally. Students evaluate equity, money, and bond markets and international banking and derivative markets and their regulation including the role of the central bank. Various institutional participants and different types of financial instruments are systematically reviewed.

Learning Outcomes

  • compare and contrast the characteristics of different types of debt securities and their pricing methods
  • describe the types of equity securities that companies can use to raise equity capital and how these securities are listed and traded on Share/Securities Exchanges
  • evaluate interest rate theories and the role of monetary authority in the financial system
  • analyse the characteristics of derivative instruments, such as futures, options, and swaps

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (50%) - Individual
  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (20%) - Individual
  • Written - Argumentative Essay - (30%) - Group
