BM1110 - Molecules to Microbes

Credit points:03
Year:2024
Student Contribution Band:Band 2
Administered by:College of Public Health, Medical and Vet Sciences

Subject Description

This introductory unit provides the opportunity to explore the interactions between microbes and the hosts they infect. We begin with some basic cell biology which underpins cellular function. We will then discuss the classification, structure and growth of the major groups of microbes and the processes by which they are transmitted to, and subsequently cause disease in the host. You will develop a broad understanding of immune function as we will also investigate the mechanisms by which the host fights back following invasion by these microbes. Practical sessions introduce you to basic microbiological techniques, including aseptic technique, microbial staining and microscopy and immunological assays.

Learning Outcomes

  • demonstrate a broad and coherent understanding of cellular structures and functions
  • demonstrate a broad and coherent understanding of microbial structure and function
  • describe microbial interactions with the host in infectious diseases and how immune responses work to inhibit microbial growth
  • analyse scientific evidence and draw logical conclusions

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (30%) - Group & Individual
  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (50%) - Individual
  • Written > Test/Quiz 2 - (20%) - Individual
