Subject Description

    Bioengineering is usually defined as the exploitation and manipulation of biological resources to deliver commercial and social benefits. This subject is designed to cover the fundamental and advanced aspects of bioengineering with a particular focus in recombinant DNA technology and recombinant protein production in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes with applications in molecular diagnostics, microbial production of therapeutic agents, bioremediation and biocatalysts. The subject will also examine contemporary ethics and patenting issues relevant to bioengineering.

  • design a bioengineering research proposal based on advanced recombinant DNA and protein technologies
  • argue the ethics and patenting procedures associated with bioengineering

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (60%) - Individual
  • Oral > Presentation 1 - (10%) - Individual
  • Written > Essay (including multi-draft) 1 - (15%) - Individual
  • Written > Project report - (15%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Achieve an overall percentage of 50% or more; Hand in the entire assignment component (Presentation, Essay and Project report); Pass final examination (50% or more).
