Subject Description

    The aim of this subject is to prepare Indigenous and non-Indigenous students to work respectfully alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by providing students with culturally appropriate skills, theoretical understandings, and frameworks. Students will develop and practice applying appropriate skills for working respectfully and safely with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities and develop a critical awareness of the unique, complex, historical, and contemporary relationships between social work and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This includes an analysis of social structures, systems, inequities, and injustices, and how to apply professional knowledge and skills to address injustices.

Learning Outcomes

  • explain how historical and contemporary experiences influence identity and relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
  • critically evaluate and apply culturally appropriate skills and knowledge for working respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • differentiate between the histories and cultural practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • critically examine self in professional practice in relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Case study analysis - (50%) - Individual
  • Written > Reflection/reflective task 1 - (50%) - Individual
