Subject Description

    Tourism is a global economic activity that occurs within complex socio-cultural, political and operational systems. The aim of this course organising subject is to enhance student awareness of these complex and dynamic tourism systems and to analyse these systems within a Pressure-State-Response framework. The subject will explore the forces that create, sustain, shape and limit tourism. It will then link these pressures to the nature of tourism organisations and their operations before analysing how tourism enterprises respond to these forces. A substantial focus of the subject will be on cross-disciplinary approaches to the analysis of tourism systems to enhance their sustainability.

Learning Outcomes

  • examine and differentiate tourism systems models
  • apply systems models to assess and interpret the forces on and responses to sustainability and operational issues
  • critically analyse impact of digital disruption on tourism system's resilience and review innovative approaches

Subject Assessment

  • Oral > Presentation 1 - (30%) - Group & Individual
  • Written > Case study analysis - (40%) - Individual
  • Written > Critical appraisal/review - (30%) - Group
