Subject Description

    This subject provides an introduction to how health economics is applied to public health. The subject will cover theoretical frameworks of applying economics to public health; the role of economic evaluation in decision-making; and a comprehensive overview of economic evaluation methodologies, including cost-of-illness studies, cost-effectiveness analysis, cost-utility analysis, cost-benefit analysis and social return on investment. This subject builds provides students with an opportunity to understand analytical techniques of health economics and how they are applied in practice.

Learning Outcomes

  • define and explain the key concepts of health economics and the challenges of applying these concepts to public health
  • identify and critically evaluate sources of cost and outcome data for different health-related projects
  • integrate theoretical and technical health economics knowledge to analyse the role, strengths and weaknesses of economic evaluation methods to decision-making in public health
