Subject Description

    Travel medicine seeks to prevent illnesses and injuries occurring to travellers going abroad, develop contingency plans whilst they are abroad, and manage problems arising in travellers coming back or coming from abroad. The main focus is to prevent illnesses and injuries during travel by using different approaches, mainly through the provision of health advice, vaccination, chemoprophylaxis and other preventive measures. You will learn about the different risks for travellers in different regions of the world. You will also apply your knowledge in addressing special groups of travellers.

Learning Outcomes

  • provide pre- and post-travel health advise and health education to the traveller
  • appraise the main risks of the most common diseases for travellers in specific regions/countries
  • formulate a vaccination schedule as well as preventive measures tailored to the needs of the individual traveller or group
  • critically analyse available literature on approaches to prevention of common travel health problems
  • discuss approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of the most common travel-related health problems/illnesses in traveller seeking clinical care

  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (10%) - Individual
  • Oral > Presentation 1 - (30%) - Individual
  • Written > Examination (College administered) - (60%) - Individual
