Subject Description

    This subject includes a detailed study of the classification, epidemiology, morphology, life cycle, control, diagnosis and treatment of protozoal and helminthic infections in humans. The subject has an applied focus and deals with current and topical aspects of human parasitology. Laboratory techniques for routine clinical diagnosis of parasitic infection are a significant focus of the subject. Through human parasitology, we aim to assist students to become competent in understanding and addressing parasitological problems current in Australia, the Asia-Pacific region and throughout the world.

Learning Outcomes

  • be able to respond competently to requests for assistance with parasitological problems
  • demonstrate skills in basic parasitological diagnostic laboratory procedures
  • demonstrate an understanding of the importance, epidemiology, biology, life-cycle, morphology, diagnosis, symptomology, management, control and prevention of the common helminths, protozoa and arthropods parasitic in humans

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (10%) - Individual
  • Written > Examination (College administered) - (60%) - Individual
  • Oral exam and practical's - (30%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Successfully complete lab safety induction prior to on-campus attendance. Achieve an overall percentage of 50% or more. Complete and submit all pieces of assessments. Attend and complete the mandatory Mini-Block.
