SP5204 - Clinical Exercise Physiology Management of Neurological Conditions and Cancer

Subject Description

This subject addresses the pathophysiological basis of neurological conditions and cancer. This subject comprises a combination of online learning and compulsory on-campus (residential) activities. In this subject students will attain advanced knowledge and skills in facilitating and interpreting assessments and clinical exercise interventions for neurological conditions and cancer. Students will also explore environmental and clinical factors influencing safety when facilitating assessment and exercise interventions, including the identification and management of exercise contraindications and adverse signs and symptoms of neurological conditions and cancer, as well as risk factor stratification, and the effects of medications and treatment on exercise.

Learning Outcomes

• demonstrate advanced knowledge of the pathophysiological basis, identification and diagnosis, treatment, and functional limitations and safety considerations associated with neurological conditions and cancer
• apply risk stratification and health-based screening for neurological conditions and cancer to identify contraindications and/or risk to exercise, and adapt exercise interventions based on available information
• design, facilitate, and interpret exercise based assessments to identify neurological and/or functional limitations, and determine safe capacity for exercise and/or lifestyle interventions for people diagnosed with neurological disease and for people diagnosed with cancer
• create clinical exercise interventions for people diagnosed with neurological conditions and for people diagnosed with cancer, as well as recognising contraindications to exercise, and identifying and responding to adverse reactions from exercise

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties; pass every assessment item; participate in 100% of scheduled residential activities.
