Subject Description

    This subject will examine special interest topics in the area of sport, the influence of exercise on immune function and blood biochemistry, and the physiological, biochemical and pathological effects of short and long-term exposure to exercise in extreme environmental conditions

Learning Outcomes

  • identify the classes of prescribed and prohibited drugs and procedures; the reason athletes take these substances and their effects and possible side effects
  • critically analyse the exercise-induced changes in blood gases, electrolytes and immune function
  • critically analyse the physiological responses, adaptations, monitoring and recovery to acute and chronic exercise via interactions with 'ergogenic' aids or technologies
  • critically analyse the physiological responses and adaptations to acute and chronic exercise in various environmental conditions
  • argue the importance of maintaining hydration during exercise and the current recommendations for fluid intake prior to, during and after exercise particularly in relation to differing environmental conditions

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties; participate in at least 80% of scheduled practical classes.
