SL3013 - Topics in Focus in Speech Pathology 2

Subject Description

This subject provides students with the opportunity to explore a range of client presentations and conditions and associated speech pathology assessment and intervention approaches. These conditions include disorders of cognition, neural and sensory processing, and disorders of fluency across the lifespan. This subject builds on and extends students' skills, knowledge, and understanding across diverse practice areas and supports understanding of how speech pathology services operate within systems and organisational frameworks. Students will develop knowledge and skills for clinical practice in regional, rural, remote and tropical settings, with a particular focus on working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Learning Outcomes

• synthesise information from a variety of clinical sources in order to formulate communication profiles, clinical diagnoses, and intervention plans for clients presenting with cognitive communication disorders, complex needs and diverse personal circumstances; applying understanding of the influence of external and internal factors on therapeutic outcomes
• develop and undertake collaborative preventative, educational, and/or promotional projects or programs related to speech pathology
• plan, conduct, analyse and interpret speech pathology assessment procedures relating to children and adults with concerns related to fluency
• plan, justify, and demonstrate speech pathology intervention procedures relating to children and adults with fluency disorders

• Written > Case report 1 - (30%) - Individual
• Oral presentation (group) 15%; Written educational resource 15% - (30%) - Group & Individual
• Performance/Practice/Product > Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) - (40%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; pass every assessment item; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties; participate in at least 80% of all class activities.
