SL2003 - Acquired Speech Impairments

Enrolment is restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Speech Pathology, Speech Pathology IHCAP Program and the Bachelor of Speech Pathology Honours Programs.

Subject Description

This subject prepares students for practice in working with clients presenting with acquired speech disorders. The subject builds on prior learning in areas of neurology, linguistics and phonetics, and clinical processes to support development of clinical reasoning associated with assessment, description and diagnosis, and planning of intervention when working with clients experiencing impairment, activity limitation, participation restriction, and other psychosocial impacts associated with motor speech disorders and their precipitating health conditions. The subject will also explore issues in speech pathology management of intelligibility enhancement in non-pathological situations such as language, dialect, and accent difference.

Learning Outcomes

• evaluate acquired health conditions and their implications for motor speech planning, control, and execution
• plan and evaluate holistic speech pathology assessment of motor speech disorders in adult populations
• analyse, synthesise, and interpret speech pathology assessment information gathered from adult clients with motor speech disorders
• plan and justify speech pathology interventions for adult clients with motor speech disorders

• Written > Essay (including multi-draft) 1 - (20%) - Individual
• Written > Case study analysis - (30%) - Individual
• Oral > Viva - (50%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements
