RH5800 - Advanced Topics in Podiatric Practice

Subject Description

This subject will extend students' theoretical knowledge and clinical skills in relation to advanced decision making in complex situations in podiatric practice. The subject aims to equip students with the skills and expertise to address complex acute and chronic foot health issues and collaborate with other health professionals in a range of health settings to achieve the best podiatric outcomes for patients. A range of topics will be explored including assessment and management of high risk feet; foot diabetes; education and training of other health professionals in relation to the high risk foot; care and management of complex wounds of the foot; oedema and peripheral vascular disease risk assessment; lower limb biomechanical changes in diabetes; and the development of prevention and self-management programs for individuals and groups.

Learning Outcomes

• demonstrate advanced skills to independently manage increasingly complex chronic foot health issues at the individual client and group level
• demonstrate advanced skills in the assessment of oedema and peripheral vascular disease risk and apply specialised knowledge of the management of complex wounds of the foot and lower limb
• demonstrate a high level ability to collaborate with other health professionals and provide education and training regarding the assessment and management of at risk and high risk feet in order to optimise podiatry outcomes for patients and groups
• apply high level clinical skills to assess and manage lower limb biomechanical changes in diabetes

Subject Assessment

• Oral > Presentation 1 - (30%) - Individual
• Written > Essay (including multi-draft) 1 - (40%) - Individual
• Written > Case study analysis - (30%) - Individual
