PY5305 - Biopsychosocial and Cultural Models of Health

Subject Description

In this subject students will learn about biopsychosocial and cultural models applied to specific health disorders. Students will have the opportunity to develop skills in biopsychosocial and cultural formulation and the development of evidence-based treatment plans. The clinical psychologist's role in the development of behaviour change programs will be explored. Students will have the opportunity to disseminate information about the relevance of psychology and the importance of interprofessional collaboration in managing physical health conditions to their peers and others.

Learning Outcomes

• Synthesise and apply principles of biopsychosocial and cultural assessment and interprofessional practice to tailor client centred treatment plans
• Expertly communicate with relevant stakeholders, including others within the interprofessional health care team, about the biopsychosocial and cultural impacts of health conditions
• Apply appropriate cultural considerations to chronic health presentations to facilitate quality outcomes for clients from diverse populations in tropical, and rural and remote areas including the culturally and linguistically diverse and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
• Evaluate, synthesise and apply biopsychosocial and cultural models of health in the context of prevention and treatment of health disorders
• Reflect critically and respectfully on the practice of one's self and others working within the interprofessional health care team to develop quality practice and to plan ongoing professional learning

Special Assessment Requirements

Pass requirements: pass every assessment item; attend all scheduled classes; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties.
