Subject Description

    The purpose of this subject is to introduce students to advanced qualitative and quantitative research methods and their application. Emphasis will be placed on conceptual understanding of analytic techniques; methodological issues associated with the use of different designs; statistical decision-making; conducting and interpreting analyses; and critical evaluation of published empirical research. Students will develop their research methods knowledge and skills, as well as develop science communication skills for both academic and practitioner audiences as well as the general public.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the research process, including how to make well-informed, ethical, and practical decisions about appropriate courses of action at all stages of the research process
  • Appropriately outline, undertake, and report on advanced data analysis, including quantitative techniques (i.e. mediation and moderation) and qualitative techniques (i.e. thematic analysis)
  • Demonstrate communication skills in pitching and disseminating research to relevant stakeholder groups
