PY3103 - Mining the Mind: Psychopathology

Subject Description

    The subject presents empirical approaches to understanding maladaptive mental processes and behaviour, psychosocial disorders, and dysfunctions in all age groups. The primary focus is upon major areas of psychological dysfunction, as well as problems of diagnosis and assessment. Clinical aspects related to symptoms, aetiology, etc. and theories and research findings will be presented from an integrative perspective that emphasizes multi-factorial rather than uni-factorial approaches to understanding psychological disorders. Therapeutic interventions for different disorders will be surveyed, but are not a major focus of the subject. This subject is relevant to the professional practice of psychologists and complements material in the subject PY3104:03 Principles of Counselling.

Learning Outcomes

  • Appraise the basic perspectives/paradigms in psychopathology
  • Relate the neurobiological and genetic bases of psychological disorders
  • Apply diagnostic criteria using the DSM-5 to diagnose psychological disorders
  • Identify suitable treatments for each disorder which are culturally appropriate and sensitive to the diversity of individuals including but not limited to, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties.

Assumed Knowledge:  To undertake this subject, students must have successfully completed 12 credit points (four subjects) of level 1 study at tertiary level
