Subject Description

    Social psychology is concerned with the broader social contexts of behaviour and how interactions with others influence constructions and understandings of self, others, and social reality. This subject provides a historical and contemporary overview of social psychology, introducing students to some of the key theoretical perspectives and research methods. Students will develop an understanding of the scientific study of social behaviour as they explore individual, cultural, and contextual differences in the domains of social cognition, social influence, and social relations. The applied nature of social psychology is explored with reference to current and emerging global health challenges, community mental health and wellbeing, and the sustainable development goals.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify the key theoretical perspectives and research methods utilised by social psychologists
  • Analyse, synthesize, and apply key theories of social psychology to address current and emerging social issues and trends
  • Use contemporary techniques to disseminate theoretical and practical implications of theories and empirical findings in social psychology to explain individual, cultural, and contextual differences
  • Illustrate and critically reflect upon a range of social psychology theories and methods in light of historical and emerging global issues

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties.

Assumed Knowledge:  To undertake this subject, students must have successfully completed 12 credit points (four subjects) of level 1 study at tertiary level
