PS2003 - Physiotherapy 2

Enrolment in this subject is restricted to all students enrolled in the Bachelor of Physiotherapy, Bachelor of Physiotherapy IHCAP and the Bachelor of Physiotherapy Honours Programs.

Subject Description

This subject builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in PS1001 and PS1002 Introduction to Physiotherapy Applications. Vertebral and upper limb disorders and common conditions through the lifespan will be explored. The evidence base, safety considerations and, where appropriate, the medico-legal implications of musculoskeletal physiotherapy techniques will be emphasised. The subject is intended to give students the foundation practical abilities and appreciation of the judicious use of manual therapy and associated techniques which will be necessary in future placements.

Learning Outcomes

• utilising sound clinical reasoning skills in the assessment and treatment planning process, justify the goals, intended outcomes and importance of evaluation of treatment for vertebral and upper limb musculoskeletal disorders
• demonstrate competent, safe and appropriate performance of selected manual assessment techniques, specific musculoskeletal physiotherapy treatment techniques and manual therapy techniques and understand the indications, contraindications, safety considerations and any medico-legal requirements associated with these examination and treatment techniques
• integrate key anatomical, pathophysiological and biomechanical knowledge and apply to selected vertebral and upper limb musculoskeletal injuries and conditions

• Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (45%) - Individual
• Written > Literature review - (25%) - Group & Individual
• Performance/Practice/Product > Practical assessment/practical skills demonstration - (30%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% inclusive of any penalties applied; achieve at least 50% for the practical and written exams; attend at least 80% of scheduled practical classes.
