Subject Description

    This subject will address the mechanisms of disease processes. The general principles of pathobiology are covered with particular reference to the changes at the level of cells, tissues and organs. Students will also gain skills at gross tissue description, tissue preservation, cutting and staining techniques

Learning Outcomes

  • describe and compare the difference between cell degeneration and death at the cellular level and the mechanisms by which cells adapt to an altered extracellular environment
  • compare and contrast cellular changes and responses to a range of pathological conditions such as necrosis, inflammation, repair, haemostasis, genetic disorders and neoplasia
  • explain in general terms the procedures routinely used in diagnostic pathology
  • critically evaluate the quality of pathological specimens
