PC2202 - Pharmacy Practice and Pharmaceutics 2

Subject Description

This subject introduces students to hospital and clinical pharmacy and the policies and standards underpinning clinical pharmacy services and specialist pharmacist roles. Students will contextualise this knowledge in an observational placement. The concept of pharmaceutical care will be explored and students will be introduced to the areas of patient history taking and care planning. To further situate the student in the clinical environment, students will be familiarised with basic haematology, the interpretation of laboratory values, as well as therapeutic drug monitoring. Student understanding of marketing in pharmacy practice will be developed including the principles and influencing factors of consumer behaviour, thus informing the provision of quality health care. The underlying chemistry of complementary and alternative medicines (CAMS) will be introduced to inform the therapeutic use of CAMS. Student knowledge in pharmaceutics will be further developed in the consideration of liquid and modified release dosage forms. Students will continue to develop their knowledge and skills in compounding, carrying out more advanced calculations and preparing more complex pharmaceutical products.

Learning Outcomes

• Describe the practice of pharmacy in the hospital setting, identifying underpinning standards in clinical pharmacy practice and interpreting laboratory results
• Explain how marketing and consumer behaviour can assist pharmacists in the provision of quality health care
• Describe the underlying chemistry of complementary and alternative medicines
• Describe liquid and modified release dosage forms and their applications
• Produce elementary compounded preparations including the completion of requisite records, calculations and the use of appropriate communication skills
