NS1003 - Introduction to Midwifery Practice

Subject Description

This subject will orientate students to the foundations of midwifery practice, integrating the philosophy of midwifery care throughout the content. Professional experience placement will introduce the student to the professional role of the midwife in practice.

Learning Outcomes

• Establish foundational knowledge and skills to support midwifery practice
• Describe the primary role of the midwife in the context of the health care system
• Examine how the events of history have influenced the development of midwifery practice
• Explain how the primary health care principles are integral to consumer engagement and midwifery practice
• Apply NMBA (2018) Midwife Standards for Practice to physiological care across the continuum of maternity care

• Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (40%) - Individual
• Written > Test/Quiz 1 - Individual
• Oral > Presentation 1 - (20%) - Group
• Participation > Class participation - Individual
• Written > Essay (including multi-draft) 1 - (40%) - Individual
• Performance/Practice/Product > Clinical placement performance 1 - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; achieve satisfactory grade for professional experience placement; participate in at least 80% of scheduled on-campus tutorial classes; participate in all scheduled clinical skills classes (workshops); achieve at least 50% for written examination; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties. Exams may be scheduled outside regular university exam period.
