MO1020 - Orthoses for the Upper Limbs

Prerequisites:This module requires access to a patient or consumer with an upper limb condition that requires treatment with an orthosis or cast, so as to demonstrate achievement of module outcomes in the appropriate clinical context. This module requires access to a therapist with relevant hand therapy/casting/splinting experience, who can act as a mentor and supervise assessment tasks. Supervision can take place in person or via video link by a therapist from an alternative discipline to your own.

Subject Description

    This module builds rural generalist knowledge and skills in orthotic service provision for consumers living in rural and remote communities who experience upper limb conditions. Participants will enhance and apply their knowledge and skills in assessment, clinical reasoning, orthotic fabrication and consumer education. Participants are responsible for ensuring they are practicing in accordance with the regulatory instruments of their specific allied health profession, within their own personal scope of practice and experience level and in accordance with the policies of their employer.

Learning Outcomes

  • outline the scope of the rural generalist in best practice orthotic intervention as it relates to the assessment, treatment and management of upper limb conditions in a multi-disciplinary context
  • communicate a complex knowledge of the principles and clinical reasoning of orthotic intervention to both expert and consumer audiences
  • apply clinical reasoning and skill in the fabrication of basic static orthoses or casting for common upper limb conditions commonly seen in rural and remote communities
