MD8002 - Rural and Remote Medicine Reflections on Practice

Available to any experienced medical practitioner currently working in a rural or remote location.

Subject Description

    This subject engages students in reflection on current issues in rural and remote health such as mental health, substance abuse, emergency and disaster planning and telehealth. It also covers workforce issues, practice management issues and health professional self-care; all of which are affected by rural context. In the assessment tasks students are asked to apply this knowledge to a specific rural practice and community.

Learning Outcomes

  • Analyse rural and remote health needs, health behaviour and practice
  • Assess community health problems and health education needs
  • Recognise common patterns of patient presentation and management, including for mental health, substance abuse and emergencies in rural and remote areas
  • Perform a tele-consultation, Describe current issues in rural workforce and the new health professional roles in rural and remote health AND;Discuss issues related to management of human resources, practice and life for rural and remote doctors
  • Describe the role of a rural health profrossional in terms of medical expert, leader, educator, manager, health advocate, communicator, professional and researcher

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Essay (including multi-draft) 1 - (30%) - Individual
  • Written > Research report - (30%) - Individual
  • Interview and critical reflection - (40%) - Individual
