Subject Description

    This subject is part of a two-year Honours course that includes the normal requirements of the parallel pass degree subjects. It will therefore achieve in students a high level of integration between the basic medical sciences and the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for clinical health care during six six-week rotations in various clinical health care settings. Students enrolled in this subject will undertake an additional research task that comprises a detailed exploration of a selected research topic. Students will be required to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how basic medical and social sciences impact on clinical medical care and to identify potential research questions.

Learning Outcomes

  • ability to determine and interpret an appropriate range of clinical investigations relevant to each patient problem
  • ability to take a focused history from and conduct a focused examination on patients with a range of health problems
  • to further understand the personal and professional roles of medical practitioners
  • ability to generate a list of health care problems that patients may have and to generate a management plan in response to each patient problem
  • demonstrate a high level mastery of integration of basic and clinical medical research, a capacity to analyse the literature and apply it in a clinical context

Subject Assessment

As this subject is part of a subject chain, a final standard grade (e.g. P, C) will only be recorded for each subject after successful completion of all parts of the subject chain.

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (47%) - Individual
  • Honours component Entry seminar and literature review - Individual
  • Rotation and Whole of Year assessment including essays, oral presentations, Mini-CEX, and assignments; Integrated across subject chain - (30%) - Individual
  • Performance/Practice/Product > Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) - (23%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Satisfactory attendance is required at community and clinical placements. Satisfactory academic and professional standards, as described in the College program Assessment Guidelines, must be achieved in order to progress to the next year. The Honours program includes a Clinical Project Proposal, Entry Seminar, & Lit review.

Workload expectations:
  • 100 Hours - Lectures - Introductory sessions for each clinical rotation including WOY presentations
  • 15 Hours - Tutorials - Clinical tutorials for each clinical rotation studied
  • 20 Hours - Workshops - Introductory sessions related to research i.e research methodology, data analysis, literature search and appraisal, and planning
  • 1200 Hours - Clinical placement
