Subject Description

    Discrete mathematics is the mathematics of computing. You will explore the fundamental theories of logic and proof, the abstract concepts of relations, functions, recursion and induction, and graph structures and counting principles. Through active practice and independent problem-solving, you will develop precise thinking, abstraction and generalisation skills that are central to all areas of computer science and software engineering.

Learning Outcomes

  • analyse the logical structure of arguments and assess their validity
  • apply appropriate techniques to solve problems and formulate and prove simple theorems
  • explore patterns and apply abstract concepts in familiar and unfamiliar contexts
