Subject Description

    This subject focuses on the continuity of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' presence in North Queensland and introduces students to the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our region, their traditional relationships to country and to each other. Students will have opportunities to experience and explore the continuing traditional knowledge, language, and economies associated with local geographies and the efforts of current generations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to maintain knowledge, cultural practices and connections to places of significant meaning. This is a first year subject.

Learning Outcomes

  • identify and describe sites and/or examples of evidence or records of traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge, language and cultural practices related to local geographies
  • describe the diversity and continuity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge and cultural practices in North Queensland
  • demonstrate dispositions, language and skills for productive discussions of knowledge intersections
  • reflect on the significance of continuing knowledge and connections to significant sites for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
